First of all, writing this style of song was totally something new and fun to me. I was inspired by a young girl competing on the TV show “The Voice”. She had a fun, jazzy sound in everything she did, and I remember thinking how fun and catchy her tunes were. When approached to write a Christmas song for an event in our church, I had a verse and chorus tune pop in my head right away, so I ran with it.
The lyrics, I felt should tell the true Christmas story, and paint a clear, easy picture of the birth of our Saviour-Jesus-The New Born King. It may sound cliche, but in a world that is taking Christ out of everything, I think its important to write songs that put truth in the mouths and hearts of those who sing along, hum, or just listen.
John 8:12 says, “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”
In Luke 4:18 we see Jesus was anointed to “…preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed…”
He truly is, “…the one to bring light in the darkness and He sets captives free…mighty and holy, awesome in power, brings hope and liberty…”
This is the Jesus we have inside. This is the King I wanted to portray! He wasn’t just a baby born in a humble setting! He was and still is our Saviour who has wants to be King in our lives, that we might experience the life and goodness of His Kingdom here and now!
“Glory! Glory! To the Newborn King, He Reigns!” Amen!
